ACTORS

MAIN ACTORS

1.

Ellie McCarthy

Female 18

I have chosen Ellie for my video as she is a media student and therefore understands the functions of a music video and as I will also be in her video it will make planning much easier. Her personal style also fits well with the theme of the video and genre of song.

2.

Molly McConnell

Female 18

Molly ia also a media student therefore like Ellie will understand the techniques and functions of filming a music video both Molly and Ellie being the same age and around the same height will work effectively when it comes to double close ups and will create a convincing singing duo.

Music video treatment

SONG
Of the night - Bastille
GENRE
Alternative/dance the song is a mashup of Snap - rhythm is a dancer and Corona - Rhythm of the night which are both typically dance anthems covered by bastille a typically indie band
PERFORMANCE
half will take place inside in front of a white projected wall and the other half will be outside in the evening and may be in black and white
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Filmed using my iPhone and edited on iMovie using a tripod and handheld
SPECIAL FEATURES
My main special feature will be the projection on to the actors faces and upper bodies I will film short video clips and project them creating interesting light and shadow
PROPS
Minimal props will be used on set or with the characters as it would look unrealistic to have a lot of un natural props lying around a empty orchard
COSTUME
costume for projection will be plain to work as a canvas for the  the projector and costume for outside will be layered and grunge like (I will post a fully detailed costume analysis at a later date)
MAIN SET
Half of my set will be outside in a orchard/wooded area the set will be relatively dark therefore a lot of set details will not be visible. The other half of filming will take place in front of a white background with a projection overlay creating a contrast between each shot
WEATHER
Weather is not a huge problem for my filming as I intend to film in early evening just as it begins to get dark fog would add to the effect I am going for however it is not crucially important the other aspect of filming will take place inside
GENERIC CONVENTION
Grunge clothing eg ripped jeans, oversize plaid, patent boots, and sunglasses (even though it will be at night)
RISK ASSESSMENT
The main risks will be the light from the projector and tree roots, potholes or loose ground that wont be visible when dark
DATE AND TIME
I will start filming as soon as possible

Lyric analysis

My chosen song - Of the night Bastille

the song is a mash up therefore it has a lot of different layers to it this is good as there are a lot of different beats to choose from this is helpful for editing as it is easy to alternate

Rhythm is a dancer,
It's a souls companion,
People feel it everywhere,
Lift your hands and voices,
Free your mind and join us,
You can feel it in the air,
Oh woah, it's a passion,
Oh oh, you can feel it yeah,
Oh oh, It's a passion,
Oh oh, oh, oh, oh,

(THIS IS THE RHYTHM)

You can put some joy up on my face,
Oh sunshine in an empty place,
Take me too, turn to and babe I'll make you stay,
(OH YEAH)
Oh I can ease you of your pain,
Feel you give me love again,
Round and round we go,
Each time I hear you say,

[Chorus:]
This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life,
My life,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,

This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life,
My life,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,

Wont you teach me how to love and learn,
There'll be nothing left for me to yearn,
Think of me and burn and let me hold your hand,
Oh yeah-ah-eh,
I don't want to face the world in tears,
Please think again,
I'm on my knees,
Sing that song to me,
No reason to repent,

This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life,
My life,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,

This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life,
My life,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,

This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life,
My life,
Oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,

This is the rhythm of the night,
The night,
Oh yeah.

the effects I practiced with are

.Cutting frames
.Inserting images
.Inserting text
.Adding Music
.Toning down background noise
.Changing colour saturation
and
.Saving/importing

Album cover analysis NO. 1 - abstract cover

Cover analysis - Coexist the XX

I chose to analyse this cd case because it has its own style to it and does a goos job of representing the band and there genre of music without a over crowded in your face theme that most artists seem to feature

Front cover/cardboard sleeve

Keeping a fairly subdued colour palette the initial selling point for this album is its simplicity this works in the XX's favour as it fits with the clean and relaxing sound that the band creates. The reason I labelled this cover as 'abstract' is the fact that there is no presence of a band name (apart from one X) or picture of any band members this gives the album a slightly exclusive feel that you must be in the know about the band to recognise the album. This cover appeals to the bands target audience as it is modern and artistic and the XX's target audience would most likely be image conscious and involved with image sharing sites such as Instagram and tumblr therefore sharing all there new purchases such as this album.
One way of showing this album artworks popularity is by how many times it has been redesigned by fans e.g.

Contents/CD

The left side of the open case is a cardboard sleeve initially this is different to usual CD case conventions as the contents booklet usually doubles up as the cover for the case this attention to detail makes the case more of a souvenir than simply a housing for the CD the designers have obviously taken note to the dropping sales of CD's due to digital downloads and gone the extra mile to try and entice more of the target audience on the right side of the open case is the exact same image to that on the cover my theory to this is if the CD is kept in a storage sleeve or in a cd player ect it is instantly recognisable. The simplicty of the cover is carried through.

Back of case

Like those before the simplistic design is carried through to the back of the case featuring only the songs and some legal information/barcode
In my opinion this is a very successful design however I think using such a simplistic design for my digipack may appear lazy if not done as professionally as this CD case.

Projection

PROJECTION

Thinking of ways to make my music video more eye catching and visual I have decided to use a projector to project a image overlay over the set and artists this literally uses the body as a canvas therefore I would keep costume light to create a more blended in vibe or use darker colours to make the artist stand out more prominently

a list of videos that have used this feature are:

Miley Cyrus - We can't stop

The XX - Crystallised

Rihanna - We found love

Costume and appearance in music videos

As different genres of music tend to have different styles and themes of video this carries through to the appearance and styling of the artist that is appearing in them
for example a band such as the foo fighters do not appear to put as much effort into their image as a young pop stars such as Miley Cyrus particularly when experiencing a pop identity crisis like Miley

FOO FIGHTERS
Established and well known with a fan base that would most likely only be interested in the music therefore a much smaller effort it put into there videos for example

Best of you - Foo Fighters

the video is focused mainly on the band members in the style that they would usually wear just slightly more structured it is also simple and was probably quite low budget as there fan base would be much more interested in the quality of the song rather than the video

MILEY CYRUS
A well known singer with a generation of teenagers that have grown up with her squeaky clean image currently experiencing a identity crisis trying to shed her image and gain a more mature 'skins' type image

We can't stop - Miley Cyrus

The video is very highly styled with obvious references to pop culture that her fan base would understand. She has attempted the shock factor in this video and it has become quite the controversial topic this video is obviously made for the youtube generation was probably quite big budget and features a lot of product placement
her costumes are all high fashion and recognisable showing she is obviously very image aware

note

This is a look book video for LOVE magazine
unfortunately the video is not on youtube so I have posted the link to there Vimeo account

http://vimeo.com/70486015

I like the style and simplicity to this video and how the editing is so precise to the beat of the song

Detailed music video analysis

Video I will be analysing: of the night - bastille

Director: Megaforce
Producer: Kathleen Hefferman
Company: Iconoclast
genre: alternative

This video fits with the genre of alternative as it is narrative and does not feature the artist at all it also has a hand filmed element something that many people into alternative music have a interest in

Many of the footage takes place in the night referencing to the title it also has a sepia effect with a old film style referring to the original songs that this song is taken from:
Corona - Rhythm of the night
and
Rhythm is a dancer

it also features text mirroring the words appearing in beat with the lyrics:

this emphasises the key lyrics of the song and makes them stand out to the audience.

a lot of footage also takes place at night:

referring to the "of the night" aspect of the lyrics

as stated before most of the video cuts to the beat of the song this gets the viewer to take notice of the beat and get more engrossed in the song.

the video changes from long panning shots of venice scenery for the more dragged out notes
to short snappy strobe light like images and text for the shorter notes.

as this video is concept based and by a alternative indie band it does not feature the artist or band members this could be for two reasons:
ONE: It is not one of the bands main songs and has not done particularly well compared to others therefore a simpler smaller budget video was all that was needed.

TWO: It fits with other video themes from the indie and alternative genre that tend not to include the artist as they would like to fans to focus more on the music not them they are also usually concept or narrative based (other examples of videos not featuring the artist from this genre are alt-j breeze blocks and Diane young vampire weekend ).

This video is along the lines of Bastilles other videos in the fact that it doesn't feature the band prominently however some of there videos do feature the band members but only for a short amount of time and not usually linked to the narrative.

There is no sexualised display in this music video but there is a aspect of personal handheld footage that gives it a intimate explorative feel
